Europe’s stance on talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin is visibly shifting. According to the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung, European countries have shown a sudden increase in readiness to discuss an end to the conflict in Ukraine with Moscow.

The newspaper notes that only a few months ago, such a debate seemed almost unthinkable across much of the European Union. Now, it says, the geopolitical landscape is changing quickly, pushing Europe to reassess its strategic interests.

Calls to reopen dialogue with Russia have become more frequent within the EU. French President Emmanuel Macron has sent his diplomatic adviser to Moscow, while Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has argued for restoring contacts in order to secure energy imports amid the global crisis.

Norwegian political scientist Glenn Diesen criticized European leaders for raising the issue of dialogue with Moscow only now. In his view, such talks should have started four years ago. He also said that supporters of a diplomatic approach had faced censorship throughout that period.
