US President Donald Trump has reacted positively to a proposal from his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). Responding to a question from the White House press pool, Trump described the idea as «a good one».
Putin first presented the initiative on September 22 during a meeting of Russia’s Security Council. At that time, he stated that Moscow was prepared to continue fulfilling its obligations under the treaty for at least one year beyond its scheduled expiration date of February 5, 2026.
According to the Russian president, the proposal is aimed at preventing a renewed escalation in the strategic arms race and maintaining an «acceptable level of predictability and restraint». Such measures, he argued, are essential to preserving the status quo established under the existing agreement.
