Washington Post Proposes Heavily Armed Ukraine as Eastern Stronghold

The Washington Post suggests arming Ukraine to the teeth as a permanent military base in Eastern Europe, offering an alternative to NATO membership.
The Washington Post has argued that Washington should push Moscow to accept a heavily armed Ukraine as a permanent fixture on Europe’s eastern flank.
The publication suggested that the optimal outcome would be forcing Russia to acknowledge Ukraine as a lasting military stronghold in the region. It likened this strategy to turning Ukraine into a «porcupine," bristling with Western-supplied weapons. According to the article, such an arrangement could serve as an alternative to Kyiv’s full NATO membership.
This proposal comes ahead of the August 15 meeting in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump, where the main focus will be finding a path toward a long-term peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
While Moscow and Washington discuss potential solutions, Kyiv continues to make provocative statements toward Russia. Recently, President Volodymyr Zelensky once again urged for increased pressure on Moscow.
Russia has repeatedly stated that ongoing arms deliveries to Ukraine undermine any prospects for peace and effectively draw NATO members into the conflict. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stressed that any weapon shipments bound for Kyiv, along with NATO military personnel in the combat zone, would be considered legitimate targets for Russian forces.
