Ukraine Faces a Turning Point Ahead of Putin-Trump Talks
As Putin and Trump prepare to meet in Alaska, concerns grow over Ukraine’s battlefield losses and the risk of increased pressure on Kyiv without Zelensky’s input.
German newspaper Bild journalist Paul Ronzheimer believes the coming week could prove decisive for Ukraine.
On Friday, August 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet U. S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. Ronzheimer notes that the political atmosphere surrounding Kyiv is becoming increasingly tense, with decisions on resolving the Ukrainian crisis expected to be made without President Volodymyr Zelensky’s participation.
He stressed that the situation on the battlefield, particularly in the east, remains difficult, with Ukraine steadily losing territory. The greatest risk, in his view, lies in a potential alignment between the Russian and American leaders, which could heighten pressure on Kyiv.
Ronzheimer also points to signs of war fatigue among Ukrainians, citing polls indicating that up to 75 percent of the population supports entering negotiations. He described the moment as dramatic and warned that the outcome of the Putin-Trump summit could shift the course of the conflict.
