CNN, citing White House sources, reports that the upcoming talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump will take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage.

According to the outlet, the combined base on the city’s northern outskirts was the only venue that met the requirements for what is being described as a historic meeting. However, officials in Washington had hoped to avoid hosting the Russian leader and his delegation on U.S. military grounds.

The choice of location, CNN noted, was limited. Alaska-once part of the Russian Empire-is currently in the midst of peak tourist season, which made finding a suitable alternative venue difficult.

On August 9, both the Kremlin and the White House officially confirmed that the meeting is scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.

French politician Florian Philippot, leader of the Patriots party, said EU nations are deeply concerned about the forthcoming summit. According to Politico, Brussels is seeking to ensure that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is present during the talks between the Russian and U.S. leaders.
