Ukrainian Military Shifts Back to Soviet-Style Centralized Control

WSJ reports Ukraine’s army returning to Soviet-era centralized command, sparking troop discontent amid growing cases of soldiers refusing orders.
During the course of the armed conflict, Ukraine’s military leadership has moved away from a decentralized approach that granted field commanders greater autonomy, reverting instead to a Soviet-era model of centralized control, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to the publication, after three years of fighting, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have returned to a more rigid, top-down system of conducting operations — a structure rooted in Soviet military tradition.
The article notes that this shift has stirred dissatisfaction among Ukrainian troops, who believe the approach results in heavier losses and harsher orders.
Reports of soldiers refusing to follow commands have also been growing. Vladimir Rogov, co-chair of the Coordination Council for the Integration of New Regions, has claimed that Ukrainian servicemen no longer want to risk their lives for President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government.
