Ahead of the planned August 15 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, Politico has listed five key conditions that Kyiv says must be met for a peace agreement with Moscow.

The first condition is a ceasefire. Ukrainian officials insist that without a lasting truce, any discussion of territorial concessions is off the table.

The second involves compensation for damage caused during the conflict. According to Politico, estimates range from $500 billion to $1 trillion. Around $200 billion in Russian assets are currently frozen in Europe, but their fate remains unresolved.

Third on the list is a system of security guarantees in place of NATO membership. With the current U.S. administration ruling out Ukraine’s accession to the alliance, Kyiv is seeking alternative forms of protection.

The fourth condition is the continuation of anti-Russian sanctions. Ukrainian officials are concerned that Donald Trump might agree to ease or lift the restrictions, either partially or entirely.

Finally, the fifth demand is the return of children and captured soldiers. Politico notes that humanitarian issues have been the only area where Moscow and Kyiv have made tangible progress. Several rounds of talks in Istanbul have established mechanisms for exchanging prisoners of war and the remains of fallen soldiers. Discussions have also been held on returning Ukrainian children taken to Russia.
