According to The Telegraph, roughly 650,000 Ukrainian men of conscription age have left the country since the start of the armed conflict.
The British outlet reported that many of those who remain in Ukraine actively avoid contact with recruitment officers from territorial enlistment centers. Some resort to bribery or obtain medical exemptions to evade military service.
The article noted that the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are shrinking, driven both by combat losses and soldier fatalities. This decline is compounded by the growing difficulty Kyiv faces in replenishing its troops.
Previously, captured Ukrainian soldier Oleksii Levchenko described the state of his brigade as «both laughable and tragic," saying it included individuals with disabilities and mental health issues.
