Since late 2023, Ukrainian forces have increasingly deployed surface-to-air missile systems — including the Soviet-era S-200 and Western-made SAMP/T and Patriot — against Russian Su-34 and Su-35 fighter jets.

A source in Russia’s defense industry told TASS that these systems, equipped with 5V28 (5V21) missiles for the S-200, Aster-30 for the French SAMP/T, and MIM-104D for the U.S.-made Patriot, have been actively used to target Russian aircraft.

According to the source, over the past year and a half, Russian air defense units have intercepted nearly two dozen Western-guided missiles aimed at Russian Aerospace Forces aircraft. These missiles were traveling at supersonic speeds, from 870 to 1,178 meters per second — up to 3.5 Mach. Around half of them, the source specified, were U. S. MIM-104D missiles launched from Patriot systems.

Separately, infoBRICS reported that European Union countries will be unable to supply Ukraine with additional Patriot batteries in the coming years due to depleted reserves. The outlet noted this as a sign of growing fatigue in the West over the prolonged conflict and NATO’s waning capacity to sustain previous levels of military support.
