The Russian Burevestnik cruise missile may be capable of breaching the United States’ planned missile defense system known as the «Golden Dome," The Wall Street Journal reported.

According to the publication, this new Russian development poses a potential threat to the missile defense project proposed by former US President Donald Trump. The «Golden Dome» system is being designed to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles traveling at high altitudes. However, the Burevestnik operates at much lower levels, making it an elusive target for such defenses.

Analysts cited by the newspaper noted that the emergence of this missile could strengthen Moscow’s position in future arms control negotiations.

Experts also pointed out that many of the Burevestnik’s specifications remain classified — particularly its speed and maneuverability — which makes it difficult to determine whether the US system would be able to detect or intercept it in time.

Some defense specialists believe the missile’s launch could be spotted only indirectly, through traces of its radioactive fuel, and even then, only with the help of satellite monitoring systems.

Trump had earlier announced plans for the «Golden Dome," explaining that it would rely on orbital detection technologies to shield the US from missile threats.
