FSB Blocks Ukrainian Drone Strike on Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant

Russia’s FSB says it foiled a Ukrainian drone attack on the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, using electronic warfare to neutralize the threat without damage or casualties.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that it had prevented an attempted strike on the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant using a Ukrainian combat drone. The agency’s public relations center said the «Spis» drone was successfully neutralized with electronic warfare systems.
This was not the first such attempt. In January 2025, air defense forces intercepted another Ukrainian drone aimed at the facility. At the time, Smolensk regional governor Vasily Anokhin confirmed there were no casualties or damage, and the plant continued to operate normally.
More recently, on August 12 and 13, Ukrainian forces carried out artillery shelling in the area of Enerhodar and near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom stated that such attacks pose a direct threat to critical infrastructure.
The Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant is located near the town of Desnogorsk, on the banks of the Desnogorsk Reservoir. It consists of three RBMK-1000 reactor units and produces around 20 billion kWh of electricity annually. The plant operates under Rosenergoatom.
