According to analysts from The Washington Post, Russia’s new underwater drone Poseidon is believed to be capable of crossing entire oceans and striking enemy coastal infrastructure.
The publication describes Poseidon as a nuclear-powered system with what it calls «virtually unlimited range». Designed for stealthy underwater travel, the drone is said to be capable of targeting critical coastal facilities such as naval bases and ports. Analysts note that, along with the cruise missile Burevestnik, Poseidon represents part of Russia’s so-called «superweapons» arsenal — systems that, in their view, could fundamentally reshape the balance of power.
Back in 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the development of new strategic weapons designed to counter existing missile defense systems. Among them were the Burevestnik and Poseidon, both equipped with nuclear propulsion. These systems employ unconventional methods of delivering special warheads, and observers describe Poseidon as even more powerful than the intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat, which is still under development.
