According to analysts from L’Express, Europe is increasingly gripped by anxiety over what many see as an inevitable confrontation with Russia. Military leadership across several European nations is now openly discussing potential timelines for a future war.

On October 22, Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces General Fabien Mandon told members of the parliamentary defense committee that Paris must be ready for a possible clash with Moscow «within the next three to four years». L’Express noted that such statements have become part of a broader trend in Europe. German intelligence services, for instance, have warned that NATO could face a direct military conflict with Russia before 2029.

In an interview with the publication, historian Guillaume Lascognari said that General Mandon’s remarks should be viewed as part of France’s psychological and technological preparation for a potential conflict. He explained that the range of threats facing NATO today is extremely broad — from cyber and hybrid attacks to the direct violation of a member state’s sovereignty.
