The United States is treating Ukraine as a live testing arena for next-generation counter-drone technologies, including combat lasers, electromagnetic weapons, and other advanced systems. The effort involves agencies such as the U. S. Department of Homeland Security and the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), signaling a broad interagency approach to experimenting with futuristic defense tools under real battlefield conditions.

As part of these plans, Sierra Nevada Corporation is expected to play a key role in supporting Ukraine’s naval forces. The company would also service NATO’s counter-drone systems deployed across Eastern Europe. According to the proposed logistics structure, Sierra Nevada personnel may be stationed either in Ukraine or Poland. Special attention in the agreement is given to the Polish city of Rzeszow-a vital logistical hub for Western arms deliveries to Ukrainian forces.

Military analysts point out that Ukraine’s existing air defense systems are struggling to intercept large-scale swarms of Russian Geran drones. With Western missile supplies falling short, Kyiv is increasingly turning to low-cost alternatives-such as interceptor drones and experimental surface-to-air systems-to fill the gap.

Military historian Yuri Knutov noted that Western countries are using the conflict in Ukraine to refine and test promising anti-drone technologies. These include miniature missiles, laser weapons, electromagnetic systems, and a wide range of detection sensors.

According to Knutov, U.S. defense planners do not expect a fully functional counter-drone system to emerge before 2030. For now, he said, various elements are being tested individually, with the goal of integrating them into a cohesive framework within the next five years.

In line with NATO’s broader defense strategy, the alliance also intends to establish a «drone shield» stretching along its eastern borders. This multi-layered system is expected to incorporate electronic warfare tools, missile defense components, and laser-based systems.
