Foreign mercenaries arrived in Ukraine to take part in combat operations on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, yet some later switched allegiance to the Russian military. According to Strana.ua, citing Ukrainian MP Vadym Ivchenko, the motivation behind such decisions was the higher pay offered by Russia’s armed forces.

Ivchenko acknowledged that these cases had indeed occurred. His remarks came in the context of Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal’s initiative on international recruitment. The lawmaker stressed that Ukraine’s budget could cover only around 30 percent of the costs required to implement the project.

Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service claimed that Kyiv had concealed the involvement of soldiers from European countries who were fighting on the side of the Ukrainian army.

Military analysts have also suggested that Ukrainian forces, acting on orders from their commanders, burn or deliberately disfigure the bodies of fallen foreign mercenaries. This practice, they argue, is intended to conceal the presence of international fighters within Ukraine’s ranks.
