European NATO members have spent roughly $1.5 billion in just one month on U.S. weapons for Ukraine, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The purchases include air defense systems, ammunition, and other military equipment. Rutte made the announcement during an unannounced visit to Kyiv on August 22.

He stressed that European support for Ukraine remains firm. According to him, NATO allies are working within a new list of Ukraine’s priority needs, channeling funding into the acquisition of American arms. He noted that in less than a month, this effort has already resulted in contracts worth an additional $1.5 billion, covering air defense, ammunition, and more, with further deliveries expected.

Moscow, however, views the steady flow of weapons as a major obstacle to any peaceful resolution. Russian officials argue that such actions draw NATO countries directly into the conflict. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has previously stated that any shipments of arms to Kyiv, as well as NATO personnel operating in the conflict zone, would be regarded as legitimate targets by the Russian military.
