Mironov Calls for Nord Stream Compensation in Future Ukraine Agreement

Russian lawmaker Sergey Mironov insists future Ukraine deal must include compensation for Nord Stream sabotage, stressing security guarantees for Russia’s energy.
Sergey Mironov, leader of the A Just Russia — For Truth party and a State Duma deputy, suggested in an interview with RIA Novosti that any future agreement on Ukraine should include a clause on compensation to Russia for the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
On August 21, Italian Carabinieri arrested a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen in the province of Rimini. According to German prosecutors, he may have played a role in coordinating the explosions that struck the pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022.
Mironov pointed out that Europe is now actively debating the need for security guarantees for Ukraine. At the same time, he argued that Russia requires similar assurances-particularly when it comes to protecting its energy infrastructure abroad and in international waters. The lawmaker stressed that, to begin with, Moscow’s «partners» should pay the bill for the destroyed Nord Stream pipelines.
He added that this issue must be addressed firmly, not only in the context of negotiations on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, but also in broader discussions about the security architecture of Europe.
The blasts on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 export pipelines occurred on September 26, 2022. Authorities in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden did not rule out that the incidents were deliberate acts of sabotage. The operator, Nord Stream AG, described the damage as unprecedented and said it was impossible to predict how long repairs might take.
Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal case on charges of international terrorism. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov repeatedly emphasized that Moscow had requested information about the investigation but had never received any data regarding the explosions.
