Expert: Russian Subs Capable of Striking Deep Into U.S.

Military analyst Yuri Knutov says Russian submarines patrol near U.S. coasts with strike capability, as both sides expand fleets amid growing strategic tensions.
Not long ago, former U. S. President Donald Trump publicly stated that American submarines had been deployed «closer to Russia." But according to Yuri Knutov, a military analyst and historian specializing in air defense forces, the strategic balance may be less one-sided than it seems.
Knutov pointed out that Russian submarines are also on duty near the United States. He cited the Yasen- and Borei-class submarines, armed with Bulava and Tsirkon missiles, as examples of Russia’s naval reach. Even when stationed 1,000 kilometers from the U.S. coastline, these vessels can strike targets deep inside American territory.
In his view, this capability represents a serious threat and underscores the evolving nature of modern deterrence.
Knutov also noted that the United States is ramping up its defenses in response. The U. S. Navy is commissioning Columbia-class submarines to replace aging Trident systems, a move he sees as part of a growing arms race. Despite technological advances, however, he emphasized that intercepting threats like nuclear missiles remains an extremely difficult task.
