Russian snipers are making use of specialized thermal blankets to reduce their heat signature and avoid detection by surveillance equipment used by Ukrainian forces. The detail was shared by a sniper from the Leningrad Guards Regiment of the Russian «Sever» grouping, known by the call sign Sanych.
He explained that the blanket is stretched overhead and covered with a rain cape to mask the thermal trace coming both from the shooter and the rifle. According to him, such concealment techniques have become common practice on the Kharkov front.
Sanych noted that after just three or four shots, a rifle barrel heats up enough to be spotted through quality optics even at a distance of one kilometer. For this reason, snipers limit their rate of fire and rely on thermal shielding to remain hidden.
