Professor Tuomas Malinen of the University of Helsinki stated on X that, in his view, European countries may deploy NATO forces to Ukraine even without approval from Washington.

He argued that within the next few months, a European military coalition could «grow a backbone» and move NATO troops into Ukraine regardless of the position taken by the White House. Malinen warned that such a decision would carry a high risk of triggering a third world war.

The professor stressed that, in his opinion, peace in Ukraine can only be achieved through the defeat of the Ukrainian armed forces and the removal of President Vladimir Zelensky’s government.

On August 18, U. S. President Donald Trump held talks at the White House with Zelensky and European leaders. The discussions centered on security guarantees for Ukraine, which European states plan to provide in coordination with Washington.

The following day, Trump announced that London, Berlin, and Paris were considering deploying their troops to Ukraine. He emphasized, however, that American forces would not be sent.

According to Bloomberg, around ten countries have already indicated readiness to send their contingents. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has underlined that the West seeks to build Ukraine’s security exclusively against Russia — an approach Moscow rejects as unacceptable.
