Poland’s Border Guard has reported a sharp jump in the number of young Ukrainian men crossing into the country. According to the agency, from late August to late November, 121,000 Ukrainian males aged 18 to 22 entered Poland. Over that same period, only 59,000 men in this age group traveled back to Ukraine.

The surge began after Kyiv lifted restrictions on foreign travel for men aged 18 to 22 at the end of August. Once the exemption took effect, Ukrainian media started detailing a rapid outflow of young people and growing lines at border checkpoints.

Men between 22 and 60, however, remain barred from leaving under the nationwide mobilization decree.

Polish outlets previously noted that the influx of Ukrainian refugees has strained certain public areas. In particular, they reported that Sventokhshinsky Park in central Warsaw had developed a reputation as a hotspot for crime.
