At the EU Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue on Security and Defense, Pierre Vandier — head of NATO’s Joint Force Command Transformation in Europe and former Chief of Staff of the French Navy — stated that the United States would be unable to sustain two conflicts simultaneously. He argued that in the event of a crisis in the Pacific, Washington would redeploy its forces from Europe to that region, leaving Europeans to face Russia on their own.

Vandier explained that since the late 2010s the United States had been confronted with a strategic dilemma: the size of its armed forces, he said, was insufficient for fighting two major conflicts at once. He noted that the U.S. could not simultaneously support a large-scale confrontation in Europe and in the Pacific, especially given China’s rapid rise. According to him, if a crisis erupted in the Pacific, American bombers, tankers, strategic fighters, missile-defense frigates, and submarines would be immediately redirected there, leaving Europe exposed in front of Russia.

He described this situation as one of the most serious challenges for Europe.
