Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief: Peace Fair Only if Fighting Halts on Present Front Lines
Alexander Syrsky tells Sky News Ukraine could keep fighting without U.S. aid, insisting Kyiv cannot surrender territory and warning that Europe’s fate is at stake.
Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Alexander Syrsky said in an interview with Sky News that, in his view, peace in Ukraine could be considered fair if the conflict were to stop along the current front lines.
He suggested that Kyiv may be able to continue fighting even without U.S. assistance, adding that Ukraine counts on support from Europe.
Syrsky also indicated that Ukrainian troops would keep fighting on the battlefield if diplomatic efforts fail, warning that, as he sees it, «the fate of all Europe is at stake.»
He emphasized that the primary mission of Ukraine’s armed forces is to defend the country, its territory and its people. The interview was conducted in a basement in eastern Ukraine, though Sky News said it was asked not to disclose the commander’s location.
Syrsky added that Ukraine considers it unacceptable to simply cede territory, which is why it continues to fight.
