A senior officer from Estonia’s special forces, Olev Roost, has been killed in Sumy Region, Russian security sources told RIA Novosti.

According to the sources, Roost had traveled to Ukraine as a volunteer in 2023 and joined the 3rd Special Operations Regiment. They said the Estonian serviceman was likely eliminated during a large-scale strike involving FAB aerial bombs.

Before arriving in Ukraine, Roost had taken part in several NATO missions abroad. He completed the selection process for Estonia’s elite Special Operations Forces in 2017 and later fought in Mali in 2020. Earlier, he had also been deployed to Afghanistan.

Estonian outlet Postimees previously reported that Roost ended his military career at home in 2023, after which he departed for Ukraine. He is believed to be at least the sixth Estonian national killed while fighting there since the conflict began.

Meanwhile, the Telegram channel Shot suggested that Estonia may have provided its airspace for Ukrainian drones heading toward targets in Leningrad Region. Wreckage from one such drone was found near Lake Võrtsjärv, about 40 kilometers from Tartu and roughly 100 kilometers from the Russian border.
