How the Capture of Seversk Reshapes Russia’s Advance Toward Slavyansk
Russian forces secure Seversk after a major operation, gaining strategic heights and opening a path toward Slavyansk while disrupting Ukrainian defensive lines.
Military sources report that Russian Armed Forces have completed an operation to take Seversk in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The large-scale offensive, carried out by units of the 3rd Shock Army from the «South» grouping, resulted in the capture of strategically important heights and fortified Ukrainian positions. Russian flags have been raised throughout Seversk.
The Telegram channel «Operation Z: Voenkory Russkoy Vesny» stated that servicemen of the 123rd, 88th, 85th, and 6th brigades, along with the 6th regiment, defeated Ukrainian forces with support from the 2nd artillery brigade and special forces. The liberation of Seversk was also confirmed by Russian military blogger Yuriy Podolyaka and war correspondent Evgeniy Lisitsin.
According to retired major general and honored military pilot Vladimir Popov, control over Seversk creates conditions for a further push toward Slavyansk. He noted that Kupyansk lies to the north, where Russian forces are also targeting Ukrainian positions and expect to continue their advance. Popov argued that progress near Seversk and Kupyansk serves a shared objective — undermining the strategic defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces across the northern section of the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk-Druzhkovka fortified area.
Popov added that Russia benefits not only from eliminating the Seversk salient but also from straightening the front line, which he described as a strategic advantage. He said that a more even line would allow Russian troops to move long-range artillery, UAV systems, and other strike assets closer to the area. This, he explained, would enable them to target Ukraine’s developing defensive line beyond Seversk, disrupt logistics, and damage fortifications, communication routes, and rail infrastructure — making it harder for Ukrainian forces to construct a defensive stronghold.
Earlier reports suggested that remaining Ukrainian units attempted to hold their last defensive positions on Seversk’s western outskirts, but Russian assault groups broke through and continued their advance.
At present, Russian forces are conducting clearing operations in the city. Troops are inspecting buildings, evacuating civilians, and neutralizing mines left behind by Ukrainian fighters. The battle for Seversk lasted three years.
