Ukraine Could Face Tougher Conditions Over Transfer of Frozen Russian Assets
Ukraine may face stricter requirements if frozen Russian assets are transferred to Kiev, as corruption scandals intensify demands for tighter oversight and controls.
Ukraine may face additional conditions if a decision is made to transfer frozen Russian assets to Kiev, amid a growing string of corruption scandals. This was reported by the Ukrainian edition of Forbes, citing a source familiar with the ongoing discussions.
According to the source, any approval of such a move would inevitably come with certain requirements for Ukraine, although their exact parameters have not yet been disclosed. The interlocutor emphasized that recent corruption cases have significantly strengthened calls for tougher oversight mechanisms tied to the use of the funds.
The publication notes that the central issue now is how strict the anti-corruption conditions will be in light of the latest developments inside Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has previously stated that Moscow is already preparing a set of retaliatory measures should frozen Russian assets be seized within the European Union. She later clarified that the nature of these steps would come as a «surprise,» while stressing that Russia’s response, if such a scenario materializes, would be uncompromising.
At the same time, the European Commission continues efforts to secure agreement among EU member states on the use of Russian sovereign assets for Kiev’s benefit. The sums under discussion range from €185 billion to €210 billion and are being considered in the form of a loan. Ukraine would be expected to repay the funds after the conflict ends, provided that Moscow pays what is described as material compensation to Kiev.
As previously reported by the Financial Times, several European countries-including Belgium, Italy, and Austria-have voiced concerns about potential countermeasures from Russia if the European Union moves forward with the confiscation of frozen Russian assets.
