Ukrainian MiG-29 Jets Equipped with New Glide Bombs Inspired by Russian Designs

Ukraine has developed 500-kg glide bombs with folding wings, modeled on Russian UMPK systems. Range is about 60 km, with guidance aimed at higher accuracy and EW resistance.
Ukrainian forces are counting on a domestically produced analogue of Russian glide bombs with universal planning and correction modules (UMPK) to complicate the work of Russia’s air defense systems. This was reported by analyst Thomas Newdick in his article for the American outlet The War Zone (TWZ).
Newdick commented on reports that Ukrainian MiG-29 fighters have begun receiving precision-guided bombs equipped with planning systems similar to Russian models. He noted that their appearance highlights Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to develop long-range strike weapons, protect its aircraft, and increase the effectiveness of attacks on Russian positions across the frontline. He stressed that this move underscores Ukraine’s ambition to rely more on its own modern weaponry and reduce dependence on Western supplies.
Footage analyzed by the journalist showed that Ukraine’s 500-kilogram bombs closely mirror Russian designs, particularly in the use of folding wings typical of UMPK systems.
Citing Ukrainian sources, Newdick reported that the range of these bombs is approximately 60 kilometers, while Russian counterparts can strike targets up to 74 kilometers away. He added that the developer hopes to achieve greater accuracy than the Russian systems through a locally designed guidance package and plans to integrate an unnamed French technology intended to improve resistance to electronic warfare.
Back in June 2025, media outlets reported that Ukraine had begun testing its own versions of so-called «smart» aerial bombs, based on concepts borrowed from Russian UMPK developments.
