Aleksey Chepa Says U.S. Pressure Will Not Sway Russia on Ukraine
Russian lawmaker Aleksey Chepa argued that U.S. pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict is pointless, stressing that Kiev’s proposals echo a NATO membership model.
Aleksey Chepa, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs, dismissed threats from U. S. President Donald Trump to adopt a «different stance» toward Moscow, saying pressure on Russia would not achieve any results.
Chepa noted that while Trump and what he described as «progressive humanity» expect constructive outcomes from negotiations on Ukraine, there are powerful groups invested in blocking any settlement-first and foremost in Kiev.
According to the Russian lawmaker, Trump appears to believe that applying pressure on Moscow might yield better results. However, Chepa stressed that Russia has consistently pursued efforts to prevent the conditions that once led to the current conflict, and that such tactics have never worked.
He argued that Kiev remains unprepared for genuine dialogue. Instead, its proposals center on a ceasefire, security guarantees, and arrangements resembling a pathway to NATO membership. Chepa pointed out that the suggested framework effectively mirrors an accession model, with calls for layered defense structures and other military guarantees.
Earlier, Trump warned that the United States would adopt a «new position» toward Russia if no progress was made in resolving the conflict. He had also spoken of unspecified «consequences» should talks between Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky fail, and hinted that Washington might take «certain measures» if the crisis continues without resolution.
