Su-57 Fighter Completes First Flight With Advanced Product 177 Engine
Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter has completed its first flight with the new Product 177 engine, marking the start of flight tests and further upgrades.
Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57 fighter has taken to the air for the first time powered by a new advanced engine known as «Product 177.» The start of flight testing was announced by the press service of the state corporation Rostec.
According to the company, specialists from the United Aircraft Corporation and the United Engine Corporation — both part of Rostec — have begun flight trials of the Product 177 engine as part of the Su-57 fifth-generation aviation platform. The initial test flight marked the first time the aircraft flew with the new powerplant installed.
The sortie was carried out by Honored Test Pilot of Russia Roman Kondratyev. Rostec reported that the flight proceeded normally and fully met the assigned test objectives, confirming the aircraft’s stable performance with the new engine.
Developers note that Product 177 delivers increased thrust. In their assessment, this upgrade is expected to enhance the fighter’s flight characteristics and provide a technological foundation for the aircraft’s further development.
Modernization work on the Su-57 is continuing in parallel. Russian aircraft designers are refining the platform based on operational experience gained in the special military operation zone. These efforts include expanding the aircraft’s weapons capabilities and further upgrading its onboard systems.
The Su-57 is Russia’s fifth-generation multirole fighter, designed to carry out a wide range of missions, including engaging aerial, ground, and surface targets. The aircraft is capable of sustained supersonic cruising speed and features internal weapons bays, radar-absorbing coatings, and a state-of-the-art avionics suite. Its advanced level of system automation allows the fighter to assume part of the pilot’s workload, including flight control and preparation for weapons employment.
