The Telegraph: Korean-Style Conflict Pause Seen as Kiev’s Strategy

The Telegraph argues that a Korean-style freeze could let Kiev retain legal claims to disputed territories, strengthen security guarantees, and prepare for future conflict.
The British daily The Telegraph suggests that a «Korean-style» freeze of the conflict could offer Kiev a path to eventually reclaim lost territories. The paper described such a scenario as a temporary pause that avoids legally recognizing territorial losses, while at the same time strengthening Ukraine’s security guarantees and giving it the means to revisit the outcome later.
According to the analysis, the most feasible option for Kiev at this stage would be a controlled suspension of hostilities. Such a move would allow it to preserve its legal claims to contested regions and buy time to accumulate resources for a renewed confrontation with Moscow. The publication stressed that this should not be seen as capitulation, but rather as a strategic way to win time.
Back in August, The Wall Street Journal outlined two potential scenarios for resolving the conflict, both of which implied that Kiev would have to abandon some of its territorial demands. The paper also pointed out that this trajectory resembles the end of the Korean War in 1953, when South Korea, unable to recover all of its lost territory, remained under protection largely due to the presence of U.S. forces.
