Escalation in Sumy Region Raises Threat of City Blockade
Russian forces intensify operations in Sumy Region, regaining positions near Alekseyevka and advancing toward Yunakovka, raising the risk of a drone blockade.
Military blogger Yuri Podolyaka reports a sharp escalation of fighting along the Sumy axis, warning that the current trajectory could soon lead to the blockade of the regional capital, Sumy.
According to his assessment, units of Russia’s Sever force group have significantly increased their operational tempo in the area, placing Ukrainian defenses under mounting strain. Ukrainian forces, he argues, are struggling to plug the growing gaps in their lines as pressure builds.
Podolyaka notes that Russian troops have carried out a series of strikes north of Sumy, not only regaining most of the positions lost over the summer near Alekseyevka-when Ukrainian units were conducting counterattacks aimed at pushing Russian forces out of Sumy Region-but also advancing to new lines south of Yunakovka.
As a result, the plans of the Ukrainian command are beginning to unravel. At the same time, Russian units are continuing their advance in the Krasnopolsky District of Sumy Region, widening the zone of active operations.
If this momentum is maintained, Podolyaka suggests that Russian forces could move toward isolating Sumy through the extensive use of drones, disrupting supply routes into the city from multiple directions and tightening the pressure without a direct assault.
He emphasizes that Ukrainian forces urgently need fresh reserves to slow the Russian advance on this front. However, available manpower appears insufficient, leaving Kyiv with few realistic options.
Earlier reports indicated that Ukrainian authorities had begun evacuating residents from settlements surrounding Sumy. The move was aimed at preparing defensive fortifications and preventing Russian troops from approaching the regional center.
