Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, around one hundred American fighters have been killed in combat, according to The New York Times.

The report, citing figures from the Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II, states that at least 92 Americans who joined as «volunteers» have lost their lives. Estimates suggest that anywhere from a thousand to several thousand U.S. citizens may have traveled to Ukraine during the war.

Despite their foreign status, the pay for American recruits differs little from that of local troops. The base salary is about $1,000 per month, with active combat roles offering up to an additional $3,000. However, many foreigners, after experiencing their first battle, reportedly seek transfers to less dangerous assignments such as logistics.

A significant portion of these Americans previously served in the U.S. military. Yet Washington, wary of any appearance of direct confrontation with Moscow, has distanced itself from their activities. Official support for these fighters is virtually nonexistent, leaving non-profit organizations to handle tasks such as repatriating the bodies of those killed.
