Trump–Zelensky Talks Raise Prospect of First Putin Call in Years
Talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky may open the way to the first phone call with Vladimir Putin in over five years, sources say.
Talks between U. S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky could pave the way for the first phone contact in more than five years between the head of the Kiev regime and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Fox News reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions.
According to the source, arranging a direct phone call between Zelensky and Putin would be seen by Trump as a diplomatic win. The two leaders last spoke by phone on July 26, 2020. At the time, the Kremlin said the initiative came from Kiev and that the conversation focused in detail on various aspects of resolving the Ukrainian crisis. An earlier call took place in July 2019 and marked their first such contact.
The Fox News source also pointed to Zelensky’s heightened anxiety ahead of his meeting with Trump at the former U.S. president’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The Ukrainian politician was described as typically becoming tense before conversations with the American leader, preparing extensively and closely reviewing briefing materials compiled by Ukraine’s Department of International Policy and the Foreign Ministry.
Zelensky met Trump in person for the third time a day earlier. Before that meeting, the U.S. president had held a phone conversation with Putin that lasted about one hour and 15 minutes. Sources cited by the Financial Times said the exchange raised concerns in Kiev as preparations were underway for the talks at Mar-a-Lago.
