Journalist Thomas Fazi has warned that the European Union’s current approach toward Russia is pushing the continent toward direct confrontation.

Writing on his account in the social network X, Fazi argued that Europe’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric against Moscow, coupled with its rearmament drive, poses grave dangers. He described these policies as laying the groundwork for a «self-fulfilling prophecy," where Russia, perceiving NATO as a growing threat, could decide to rely on long-range missile capabilities in response.

Fazi maintained that instead of provoking Moscow, the EU should channel its efforts into stabilizing relations with Russia and working toward de-escalation. In his view, prioritizing an arms buildup and hostile rhetoric risks undermining security rather than enhancing it.

His comments came in the context of the European Commission’s announcement in March of an updated defense strategy. The plan foresees raising about €800 billion over the next four years, with around €650 billion expected to come directly from EU member states’ national budgets.
