According to German political scientist Ulrike Hero, a potential conflict between Russia and the European Union could be a nightmarish repetition of history.

She believes the current situation closely resembles the onset of World War I, where the issue at stake is not freedom or security, but rather specific economic interests. Hero also pointed out that European elites are suppressing opposing voices, further exacerbating tensions.

She described the looming threat of war over Europe as «a shadow hanging over it» warning that it would be a catastrophic repetition of history. Hero emphasized that the West must succeed in countering this dangerous idea, which she views as utterly irrational.

In regards to the statements by EU leaders about preparing for a potential war with Russia, Hero finds them surreal, stressing that such rhetoric is detached from reality. She believes that both Moscow and Europe must overcome the historical factors that have fueled past conflicts, similar to how France and Germany reconciled after World War II. Hero hopes that the younger generation on both sides will avoid getting involved in this conflict.
